Abstract New concept in knowledge engineering promise to bring the full power of computer tools to the designer's assistance. One such approach from the field of artificial intelligence is to use a knowledge base to provide advice to the designer on design issues while simultaneously supporting the normal design activities directed at other fundamental design issues. Such as "assistant" approach allows up-front consideration of engineering analysis implications and significantly reduces the tediousness and difficulty of detailed engineering analyses downstream. This paper describes research progress toward a Knowledge-Aided Design System. Knowledge-Aided Design is an approach that employs the framework of a knowledge-based system to provide assistance to the designer's decision-making process in a way similar to that provided by a knowledgeable human assistant. The KAD System is a hybrid system containing data base components, knowledge-based subsystems, and traditional engineering analytical tools. The data base components, combined with an intelligent user interface, provide easy access to existing engineering standards and codes, and the evolving building architecture representation. The knowledge-based subsystems include an intelligent geometry acquisition system, design detailers, model geenrators, and sysbolic inference procedures.
