Abstract Until now, the Intelligent Building(IB) has been defined as a building which introduces a list of new products in telecommunications, electronics, security, automation and building control systems. However, this concept has been proven insufficient for ensuring the creative architectural design of IB.IB presupposes a creative architectural design, and this starts from making a new concept of IB.This study aims to propose a better concept of IB from the view point of building design. In this study, IB has been defined as an appropriate physical and environmental setting which has total building performance to satisfy building occupants' needs for change and personalization. The ability to respond to the evolutionary need of end-user is the most important aspect of IB. And allowing each individual to control his own micro-environment is an ideal way to satisfy users' needs. In these respects, IB has four basic elements: building structure, building systems, building environment, building management. The architectural design of IB should be a performance-oriented design. The main features of it are integrated design process, total building performance, and interdiciplinary team decision making.
