Abstract An optimum inelastic seismic design is proposed for a high-rise building structure subjected to the artificial ground motions that are obtained by modifying the recorded accelerograms for past eathquakes to have constant velocity spectra in the range period of 0.5 to 5.0 seconds. For the input motions the maximum response ductility factor of each story is investigted and controlled in terms of the types of ground motions, natural period, stiffness variation of the whole stories and post-yielding stiffness in a hysteresis model so that each story has a reasonable yield strength with a ductility factor of the same order throughout the height of the structure, Also, suitable base shear coefficients are discussed for the above seismic force distribution.
