Abstract To introduce existing CAD capabilities into more closely to the structural design practice, this study, at first, reviews some requirements of conventional geometric entities, focused on their geometric, topological, and structural properties in order that they could be used as modeling entities for structural design of buildings. To effectively manage such structural entities, computer implementations through an object-oriented programming with CLOS(Common Lisp Object System) are then discussed. This study also implements a design methodology of a top-down approach, which is a structural designer's natural reasoning for design process, from spatial interactions between the geometric entities. This approach provides high-level modeling primitives for building structures, avoiding the defects that conventional bottom-up approaches accompany. This system thus saves the time required for model generation for structural design of buildings, and may provide a central communication area between applications such as structural analysis programs and other design functions.
