Abstract This paper studies the low-rise hill housing design which has great possibilities to be adopted for the developement of Korea's urban fringe. It focuses on the study of the applicability of block types in accordance with topographic characteristics of the sloping site. The results of this study are summarized as follows:1) Theoretical review of the relations between topographic patterns and block types is verified through the study of both domestic and foreign construction cases (60 cases).2) Types fit for a steel slope are double-row type, overlap-stepped type and deck type. These variables work comprehensively for the slope, and they can be planned in terms of dwelling density.3) Types fit for a gentle slope are row type, stepped type, and cluster type. They can be applied in a flexible way for all topographic patterns and directions. When they maintain a low density, these types can be freely arranged.
