Abstract In general, a "beam tie truss" is one of the most efficient types of roof trusses. It saves the amount of steel, construction time, and labor required for constructing a roof truss, because it is made of a rolled steel produced in a plant and prefabricated on the construction site. The beam tie truss also minimizies noise. In spite of such advantages, a beam-tie truss under a horizental load has not yet been widely used due to the problems of analyzing a statically indeterminate structure and estimating section sizes, and due to the complex design process. The principal content can be summerized as follows:1) this research develops theoretical equations for member forces, deflection of ridge, tension of tie and horizontal reaction by using Castigliano's theorem, and finds out the effects of elements on the stress and deformation, which are classified into three factors of figure, stress and load elements.2) The important elements which effect the member stress such as the attaching position of tie and the slope of roof, and the influence of other elements. However the other dimensions of frame and member section, are relatively small.3) This research proposes simple and practical formulas for calculating stress and deflections and for estimating section sizes on the basis of the results of a series of case studies.4) Finally this research proposes a practical design process for a beam-tie type roof truss, which simplifies the conventional design process, without checking member forces and deflections.
