Abstract There is an urgent need for a joint effort between design researchers and CAD or other application system developers in developing integrated CAAD systems. A new approach to solving integration problem is to standardize the representation of building data through the use of building data models. A building data model structures both the geometrical information and the semantic information about the building product. One of the essential steps in developing an effective data model is information analysis or conceptual modeling. The techniques used for structuring conceptual data models come from database and knowledge-based bystems theory. In this paper object-oriented data modeling paradigms and techiques are suggested for conceptual data modeling. A data integration scheme, a general framework for the development of future integrated CAAD systems is proposed. After that, future research directions are discussed. The definition of a conceptual building data model, which is in progress by the author is on the basis of the results of this study. It will be published in another paper.
