Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the required ductility of shear wall buildings in Korea. The evaluation is performed by numerical simulation using macroscopic model which is based on TVLEM. In the case of 3 typical planes for 20 stories-building excited by artificial earthquake of which the intensity is equivallent to MMI 7, the value of ductility is much less than 1. In most cases, the cracking has occurred at lower stories. As the period of structures increased, the maximum response of displacement increased. Though the each response of 3 model showed some difference, the nonlinear behavior was not severe.
