Abstract This study is intended to analyze the architectural characteristics of Mo-Jung, a sort of open-air pavillion for farming community. And for this purpose, 162 numbers of cases are surveyed by one in every Myon from all the area of Chon-Nam Province except the insular area, which is not presumed to have it. The function of Mo-Jung can be summmarised as 1)a shelter from the heat at summertime for laborors and the oldies. 2)a meeting place of rural communities to discuss the co-working and etc. and 3)a look-around place to check the pass-in and out of villegers and outers. Therefore the site is usually located at the crosssection of the boder-line between living and farming distict and the access road to the village. And the plan is economically designed as small rectangle of 2x1 spans in general. Which is enough to agree with the function as above. In general, Mo-Jung has figure of isolated object with the shilloute of village as backgrond, therefore the rooftype has envoided the gable-type. This, with the minimized floor plan, make the upper structure more sophistigated. The solution is usually found in the uppermost girder which extrodinarily extend each end to the two lower side-girders. Or there are another two beams which span the front and rear girder parallel to the proper beam. Finally, in-between every span is usually 6.5-8.5cm width horizontal timber 6-12cm higher than the floor level, which is used as pillows for snap. But the original function is suggested to identify the hierarchy of place.
