Abstract The main goal of this study was to find an optimum pipe connector design factor of building drain pipe system for noise reduction. Expansion chamber type pipe connector was suggested to reduce the drain pipe noise. The acoustic characteristics of seven poly vinyl chloride(PVC) pipe connectors were exmained to find a noise reduction effect, vibration characteristics and modal response. The theory of expansion chamber muffler was used for noise reduction analysis and a linear transient dynamic analysis using finite element analysis(FEA) was used for vibration analysis. Results show that this expansion chamber type pipe system which the area expansion ratios are m=4 and the length is L=300mm has a noise reduction effect above that of 25mm glass wool wrapping pipe system and FEA is a very useful tool for the analysis of vibration characteristics associated with building drain pipe system.
