Abstract An analysis method for the yield strength of H-Beam to SHS Column connections based on the yield line theory has been developed and is used to investigate the behavior of the connections. The method can predict the yield moment capacity of the beam to column joints which are fabricated with or without end plates. On the contrary to the complicated connections with stiffening diaphragms currently used in Japan, new simple connection types are proposed in this paper for simplicity and workability in fanrication of structural frames. The moment capacityand the stiffness of the beam to column connectionsproposed are studied theoretically and experimentally. The material properties tested show a considerable increase in the yield and ultimate strength of the material compared to the nominal strength. And the material properities are used for calculations of the yield moments of the connections. It is shown that initial stiffness of the connections are highly improved due to the end plate which is fillet welded to the flange of the column. The method proposed has been proven accurate and useful in comparison with the test results.
