| Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to survey neighborhood around homes for the aged and analyze it's physical characteristics. Based on the results of this paper, institionalized elderly people's behavior of using neighborhood facilities will be analyzed in a subsequent study. For this purpose, first, concept of neighborhood and importance of neighborhood for institutionalized elderly people was considered, second, accessibility to neighborhood facilities was studied in terms of environmental barriers, finally, 41 of 115 homes forthe aged in South Korea were surveyed and analyzed physical characteristics of neighborhood around homes for the aged.The results of this paper are as follows;1) As a result of theoretical considerations about neighborhood, functional proximity of it for the institutionalized elderly people was verified to be very important potentially because of their physical and economical inability.2) Most of homes for the aged were located in undersirable areas, such as hillsides, sloping areas, deterioratedresidential area, etc., although there are some differences in accordance with location of homes for the aged. 3) A neighborhood sphere was analyzed to have the radius of 300M in urban area and 500M in rural area. But the radius for using neighborhood facilities in urban area is greater than in rural area. |
