Abstract Almost all the existing traditional Korean cities evolved with walls and the fortress is the most important component of walled cities. The planning principles of Korean walled cities were strongly influenced by those of Chinese. Therefore, a comparative study of the planning principles and spatial structure of traditional walled cities between Korea and China shows the same root of identity. We can also find the implications of the time-series transitions of differences between the walled cities of Korea and China. In the historical context, to compare the cities of the same period but, of different regions-for example Peking and Seoul-would be a key to understanding the urbanity of mordern metropolis which experienced the organic growth from ancient times. In this study, the planning principles which were developed from the ancient China were investigated as the basis of this research. In order to obtain an identity of urbanity in the same cultural region, and to establish the planning methodology of rational city planning for the future, the similarity and dissimilarity between the traditional cities of Korea and China were compared and analyzed in this paper.
