Abstract This study aims to present guidelines to achieve an appropriate luminance enviornment in museum's exhibition halls. In order to present appropriate illumination strategies to promote the visual performance and communicative effectiveness, It is required to identity the current illumination conditions of existing museums through field measurements. The measurements and analyses conducted in this study include:1)the illumination levels and gradient, 2)the luminance levels of brightness and contrast (luminance ratio) between the object and surrounding, 3)glare types and fixture for glare control, 4)the reflectance of interior surface, 5)the type and location of light source, 6)the relationship between exhibition items and illumination level. The results of this study present design guidelines the for Museum lighting.
