Abstract The increase of high-rise buildings draws deep attention to the application of wind effect on tall structures. In this study, we try to divide surface roughness of Korea into 4 categories and calculate the basic wind speed in the different regions through the method of probabilisticdistributions of the extremes and draw the basic design wind speed map based on the wind speed for 50 year's returnperiod.Annual maximum wind speed used here is the mean wind velocity averaged 10minute, and it is standardized homegeneously to the surface roughness category II, and to 10m height above ground surface. Probabilistic distribution for annual maximum wind speed used here isType I Extreme Value Distribution (Gumbel's Distribution), the unexceedence probability is calculated by the Hazen's method. On the basis of those, the wind speed for 50 year's and 100 year's return period are caculated for each region. Then, the basic wind speed line based on the values of 50 year's return period draws up on the map of the country. In this study, we suggest the basic wind speed map in Korea for simplified wind resistant design of structures and buildings.
