Title |
A Study on the Inner-Courtyard of the Korean Vernacular Dwellings |
Abstract |
Man gives a meaning to an architectural space through symbolic acts, and the space is organized on the basisof the meaning. Man also establishes relations with the outer world through this symbolic space of meaning. On the other hand, man gives a hierarchic order to the symbolic space through the organization of it, and the can take a balanced sense with the surrounding environment by establishing his own place in the space. The Korean traditional house is the symbolic base of theKorean spiritual world constructed through the long history. Therefore, we can build up a hypothesis that the mythic and shamanistic influence would have been considerably exercised on it until the distorted ㅁ character type was standardized.Consequently, this paper is intended to study how the Korean shamanism could exercise a considerable influence on the formation of the folk houses and how this spiritual world could organize and sign the dwelling space, especially laying emphasis on the wooden floor and the courtyard. |
