Abstract ONDOL is traditional heating system in Korea and has been developed in three stages. At the first stage, the traditional ONDOL consists of furnace, heated air passages, chimney (until 1950's) and at the second stage, the fuel was changed from fire wood to anthracite coal (until the second half of 1970's), and at the current stage, the hot water floor heating system with embedded tubes is used.Though ONDOL is the most common and the oldest residential heating system, the historical changes and the developing process of traditional ONDOL were not clearly established. So, this study aims to clarify the historical changes and evolution of traditional ONDOL(until 1950's) through the analysis of the historic relics, records and remains. As a results of this study, the forms and the characteristics of each development stages can be clearly defined as follows.1 One hearth age : only one hearth with surrounding thermal mass2 Two hearth age : one hearth for heating with surrounding thermal mass3 Downward ONDOL & short flue age : the hearth on thermal massfor heating and the short flue with chimney for cooking4 L-type ONDOL : ONDOL with an indoor furnace, heated air passages and a chimney5 Entirely floored-ONDOL : furnace was moved to outdoors and rooms were entirely floored with ONDOL
