Abstract The genetic design approach adopts the view of designas an exploration process in which various of spring design genotypes (design alternatives) are produced through the transformation of the parents design genotypes. The transformation is made by the repetitive applications of the genetic operations such as reproduction, crossover and mutation. The genetic design model comprises two phases: the evolution of the design genotypes and the interpretation of the design genotypes. The evolution phase is divided into three processes as the transformation process, the evaluation process and the termination process. At the interpretation phase, the design phenotypes are derived from the design genotypes. We propose a computational model of design using genetic algorithms.
