Abstract For structural design of the compression member with singlethin-walled open section, one needs to consider the three modes of failure: flexural buckling, torsional buckling and flexural-torsional buckling. In this paper, critical loads of hot rolled single angles and those of cold rolled light gage channels are determined by solving the characteristic equations, which include flexural and torsional terms. On the basis of determined critical loads, design loads based on the conventional flexural buckling theory and those based on flexural-torsional buckling theory are compared.
