Abstract The methods for knowledge acquisition, representation and probabilistic reasoning must be defined to develop an expert system. This paper describes a method for knowledge acquisition in the development of an expert system which is applicable to the architectural programming and planning stage. Since design knowledge changes over time, the knowledge base in this domain must be upated regularly. This, and other advantages, lead to the development of and automated knowledge acquisition method. The proposed system evaluates a design project based on the accumulated design knowledge. The result of the evaluation is accumulated for further use in the system. When there is no enough knowledge to evaluate a project in the system knowledge can be provided through an external experience-analysis. As a result as the proposed system analyzes and evaluates more design solution, it accumulates design knowledge and formulates design rules.
