Abstract The elastic and inelastic behavior of moment-resisting steel frames with composite slabs subjected to lateral loading is studied. Emphasis is placed on the effect of the concrete slab on the behavior of joints. Trilinear analytical models representing the behavior of composite beam-to-column joints are presented, and shear strengtes of joint panel zones for the seismic design are proposed. Comparison of the proposed analytical models with the experimental results shows good agreement. Application of the proposed method to seismic sheardesign of joints improves the seismic resistance of the steel structures with composite slab.
