Abstract Recently the changes in social environment and the enhancement of living standards make the architectural functions of buildings more complicated. These complications of the architectural functions and the development of new materials cast considerable difficulties in making the reasonable choices of elemental building components and cost-saving criteria of their design. For these reasons, the necessity of optimization methods for building component system is being seriously raised. In order to develop an optimization method for building elements at the design stage, this study firstly constructs a diagrammatic-building-system-integration-model that analyzes the building system and generates alternatives in element level, and then systemizes the process to select an alternative proper to satisfy desired functions. Finally, the study proposes an optimization method for building component systems by developing a mathematical model to effectively calculate the cost of the optimal alternative which has been selected.
