A Review on the Definition Design and Production of Low-cost Housing in Korea |
Abstract |
The study reviews and criticizes three aspects of low-cost housing(LCH) currently developed in Korea: a concrete definition of LCH in terms of dweling unit area, occupancy status and income level; kinds of housing type and design characteristics; lastly, some basic issues and remedies for a proper design and production of LCH.The study defines a house as LCH if it satisfies one of the following three criteria: under 19pyung(62m2 ) in unit area; rental housing in occupancy status; residents incomestrata is low or medium(1-6 among 10). A narrow definition applies to a house which satisfies all of the above. A brief discussion is devoted to design issues of twoprominent housing types that are LCH in the narow definition; the social housing(i,e., the 15 story permanent tenement block built by public sector since 1989) and multi-rental housing(i,e., 3-4 stories cottage flats built by private sector since 1990). |
