Abstract Our knowledge about the visual information processing in design thinking and problem solving clearly falls short of the level reached in the areas of verbal-conceptual information processing. The study of visual thinking in architectural design suffers from a lack of explicit theoretical and methodological foundations that could assimilate the presently available evidence and give direction to future research. This study is, accordingly, to clarify the theoretical position in Cognitive Science and to link it to the protocols of architectural designers in order to understand the cognitive structures and processes involved in visual thinking and creativity of real-world architectural design. As a result of this study, we recognized the paramount role ofvisual reasoning in architectural designing. The nature of visual thinking is in the interactive process between mental imagery and drawing. The creativity in design depends on the transformations of design information in the dual (visual-graphic and verbal-conceptual) thinking mode.
