Abstract If concrete filled steel tubes are used for structural member, it is increased in load carrying capacity and plastic deformation capacity by reciprocal confine of steel tube and concrete.Especially these members have to superior in structural properties than the other section type, when used to compressive members.Accordingly, this study investigated to properties of structrual behaviors through a series of experiment with the key parameter, such as diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratio, slenderness ratio (H/D ratio) and strength of concrete. The obtained results are summarised as follow.(1) The increase ratio of deformation capacity of concrete filled steel tube column was increased to the extent of 2.4-3.7 times in stub column and 1.9-3.1 times in long column, compared with those of the hollow steel tube.(2) The increase ratio of ultimate capacity of concrete filled steel tube was increased to the extent of 1.2-1.8 times, compared with those of the hollow steel tube. Also, these increase ratio was presented significiently in stub column(3) The emprical formula to predict the plastic deformation capacity of concrete filled steel tube column as the change of strength of concrete were proposed.(4) The emprical formula to predict the ultimate capacity of confined concrete by steel tube and concrete filled steel tube column using restraint coefficient of concrete considered D/t ratio, slenderness ratio of steel tube and strength of concrete were proposed.
