Title Experimental Study on the Shear Strength of PC Horizontal Joint

Abstract A PC horizontal joint system was examined in order to evaluate its applicability and capability. Since its shear transfer mechanism depends upon the friction between concrete shear planes and the rebar dowel action, various tests were carried out with the application of the horizontal shear force and the vertical force on the shear plane. Test specimens were errected to investigate the parameters such as the shape of joint, the load eccentricity, the magnitude of vertical force, and the existence of dowel bars. In addition to the experimental investigation on such parameters, the strengths of specimens were evaluated with various equations including Code equations to check their applicability. Based on the experimental and analytical study, the followings are obtained: (1) The joint behavior does not depend upon those parameters except the magnitude of vertical force and the existence of dowel bars; (2) The frictional coefficient between concrete shear planes is afunction of the magnitude of vertical force; (3) The coefficients of friction for the interface shear between concrete planes and the dowel action may not be the same even though it is generally accepted in the design practice.
