Abstract From the nineteenth century when the interest in the Gothic architecture was increased, a study on the Gothic architecture was concentrated on the building itself and the internal space. However, a comparative study on the internal and the external space of the Gothic architecture was rare. The internal and the external space of the French Gothic cathedral architecture seem to be expressed respectively by a character of the rationalism and romanticism. the results of the interpretation on the spatial meaning of the French Gothic cathedral architecture can be summarize as follows:The structure of the French Gothic cathedral is logical, ojective, and practical and its internal space has a character of the rationalism. On the other hand, the external space of the French Gothic cathedral has a character of the romanticism that frees itself from the norm of the reason, accomodates the diverse activity of the city, creates a place for both the various culture and the arts of citizen.
