Abstract This study aims to explore the optimal design guidelines of advanced optical switching solar control windows in office buildings from the viewpoint of thermal and daylighting efficiency. Currently available and new smart windows were defined by various optical spectral switching ranges. The incident angle depenedent spectral transmittance data of each window were established by a multi-band spectral analysis tool, LBL WINDOW 4.0 Thermal and daylighting performance of each window with various lighitng control schemes was evaluated using the ESP-r, European reference program for transient building energy simulation from the basis of prototype office model and the established window performance data. Results showed that optimal configurations of smart window design parameters including thermal and daylighting factor could be found to save the annual heating, cooling and lighting energy consumption. Finally, window performance nomogram based on dynamic simulation has been established with respect to window types, WWR's, orientations and lighting control methods
