Abstract The objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the strengthening effects of concrete compression members confined with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets. Emphasis is placed on strengthening errects of the lap length and fiber direction of carbon fiber sheets.The results from this study are summarized as follows.1) The compressive strength of the confined concrete cylinder is much affected by the lap length and fiber direction of carbon fiber sheets.2) The longer lap length, the larger compressive strength is obtained.3) The compressive strength of specimen strengthened with carbon fiber sheets in the horizontal direction is increased to twice or more of that of unconfined specimen due to lateral confinements.
