Abstract To reduce the fossil fuel consumption in a private residence, an energy conservation efficiencies of the house equipped with a PV(photovoltaic) power system and a solar domestic hot water(DHW) heating system are evaluated in this paper. The optimum ratio of the nominal PV-array and solar DHW capacity is determined by a numerical simulation for several locations, orientations, loads and component costs. A PV power system and a solar DHW system could be installed on the roof of an ordinary residence, which supply almost all of the power required for household consumption and alleviate peak power demanded. Using the simulation results the energy conservation effects by the solar DHW and PV systems are discussed.
