Abstract This paper is to study the elasto-plastic behavior of high-strength concrete(f'c=400kg/cm2) columns subjected to a monotionically increasing compressive axial loads. To investigate behavior of columns, twelve specimens including two plain concrete columns were tested. The main variables in this study are volumetric ratio of transverse steel, configuration of transverse steel, yield strength of longitudinal steel, ratio of area of longitudinal steel to the area of cross section. The stress-strain curves obtained from experiments were compared with existing models by Nour, Uzumeri, Modified Kent and Park, Vallenas and Bertero, Shah and Fafitis as well as by Muguruma. Also, the test results for ultimate strength and strength gain factor of columns in this study and previous study were compared with the existing analytiacl models so as to estimate the difference between strength and ductility of columns made of high-strength concrete.Test results indicated that the Nour's model estimats confinement effects low, but ultimate strength was closed to experimental value. The Uzumeri's model predicted approximately on effective confinement in high-strength, but ultimate strength much less than experimental value.
