Abstract Residential density is understood as an important index for the evalution of living standard so that it could used for the effective land utilization and improving our living standard. With this in mind, this thesis will begin with conception of residential density and go into the case study of high rise apartment sites which have been constructed and planned during the last 5years in the Metropolitan area of Seoul. The purpose of this study is to elicit and analyse the residential density and the characteristic of space in high rise apartments. The results of this study were summarized as follows.1. DOGAEGONG APT by reducing front width makes the density of household increase.2. JUGONG APT shows value in ratio of slenderness per living unit and pitch of building.3. DOGAEGONG and JUGONG APT shows low value in building-to-land ratio and total floor area ratio in comparison with REBUILT APT.4. MINYOUNG APT shows low value in the density of household and high value in indoor area per living unit.5. REBUILT APT shows high value in total floor area ratio and the low value in pitch of building.6. High residential density could be obtained by narrowing front width and pitch of building and by deepening length of wall.7. Small site could obtain higher density per square meter such as building-to-land ratio, total floor area ratio and household density than large site because of less restriction by law.
