Abstract Much research has attempted to apply the evolutionary concept to design problem solving, especially in engineering design, and showed its success. This paper introduces the evolutionary concept in architectural design, particularly in space layout planning. An evolutionary design process model whose idea is based on natural genetics is constructed and described. A method of formulation and interpretation of design knowledge in the evolutionary model is suggested. An office layout planning problem with its associated topological and geometrical arrangements of space elements is attempted by the proposed model to verify the utility of the model. Critical difficulties of the space layout planning problem and limitations of existing design systems are discussed.
