Title |
A Study on the Four Cross Beam Structure of a Square Shaped House in Ulchin and Samchock Areas |
Abstract |
Usually framed structure of an ordinary house has odd number of cross beam, three and five cross beams, due to a ridge piece. Rarely it has even number of cross beams. However, those square shaped houses found in Ulchin and Samchock areas have even number of cross beams, i.e., four cross beam structure. Frontal side of ridge piece has three cross beams and back side, five cross beams. Some of the findings on the four cross beam structure are:(1) Square shaped houses with a four cross beam structure are found in limited areas of Ulchin and Samchock. It is sloping toward a gate from inner wooden floored hall.(2) It has tall pillars to achieve efficient interior natural lighting and to obtain visual hierarchical order.(3) The four cross beam structure of a square shaped house was devised to make a substitution of tall wooden pillars with tube pillars possible, therefore saving construction costs. Timbers for tall pillars are really difficult to obtain, and, if you can find them, they are usually very expensive. |
