The Formation and Change of Traditional Urban Residential Areas |
| Abstract |
As a cultural heritage, traditional houses are worth conserving. This research has focused on the forces which have influenced the decline of Han-Ok(Korean traditional house) and analyzed the change of the traditional urban residential areas by the field survey. The concept of Han-Ok which I adapted to use in this research is limited to those which can be found especially in urban areas.The factors which influenced the decline of Han-Ok are several: the change in the way of living, the location of traditional areas in the city, the influx of foreign culture, the changes of people's value, the institutional restriction of wooden structure, and modern construction technology. The change of the traditional residential areas was analyzed in terms of the residential structure and architectural characteristics. Traditional urban residential areas we have seen are rooted around traditional social organization. But the traditional physical surroundings can't go well with today's social organization. |
