Abstract The effect of atrium on building energy conservation is evaluated in the aspect of lighting and thermal performance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate energy performance of toplighted atrium building in terms of comparative performance of typical building configuration without roof glazing. Daylighting performance was evaluated for atrium space and adjacent office space of atrium. SUPERLITE computer program was used to simulate daylighting performance. For thermal performance of building, DOE-2 computer program which calculate building loads was used. Compared with a typical building configuration without roof glazing, there is considerable reduction of total amount of building energy use which contains annual artificial lighting energy use and annual building loads. This study demonstrates the 3% reduction of energy in the 25% skylight area.
