Abstract This paper presents the static analysis and optimum design of an axisymmetrically loaded thin shells of revolution. The finite element formulations are derived from the classical theory based on differential geometry considering curved element shape and the analysis of axisymmetric shells is numerically carried out by newly developed computer program by the finite element analysis. The optimization of the analytic results is continuously done by the GINO(General Interactive Optimizer) which is based on the GRG(Generalized Reduced Gradient) method.
