Abstract The purpose of this study is to suggest planning guidelines for developing the housing for the elderly, as the number of the elderly is growing in Korea and there is inadequate urban housing for the independent old. Some questions on their hope for theconditions of elderly housing were asked to 171 old people living in urban areas, by questionnaire and interview methods. The result of the survey was analyzed using a statistics-analysis program SAS. Based on the findings of the analysis and their planning implications, some planning guidelines are prepared in terms of the site, the building type and the dwelling unit of the housing to be built for the elderly. Some of suggested planning guidelines of urban housing for Korean elderly people are as follows;1.The urban site is desirable for elderly housing, which meets the old people's need of convenience and close accessibility to relatives and young people.2.In terms of building type, high-rise apartments are possible considering the high land price of urban housing sites in Korea. The elderly families can be arranged in a building in three ways, an apartment building exclusively for the elderly, or one mixed with other young families, or the accommodation of elderly dwellings only in the first floor of an apartment.3.The number of unit in one floor of an apartment, about 4-6 units of a short single-loaded corridor type and about 6-8 units of a general single-loaded corridor are desirable, considering rather small size of dwelling units.4.Three types as a dwelling unit are suggested for the elderly housing. The bed-sitting room type(studio type)is possible for single elderly, with the size of 8-12 pyong(1 pyong equals 3.3 square meters). The one-bed room apartment of 10-12 pyong is good for single or couple elderly, and two-bedroom apartment of 15-18 pyong is suitable for elderly couples.
