The Site of Bunwhang Temple and the Developement of Buddhist Architecture of the Seventh Century |
Abstract |
In recent years, the site of Bunhwang Temple in Kyung Ju, first constructed in 634 A.D., was excavated. According to the excavation report, the earliest site desgn was in a shape of the letter (품) with 3 image halls and a pagoda in front of them. This pattern of site arrangement reminds us the 5th century temple site of Chongam-Ri of Koguryo because of its similarity in site plan. However, this temple site of the seventh century was not retrospective version of the 5th century but a progressive design opening a new possibility that comes after this temple. Thus, the site of Bunhwang Temple has to be understood within the context of the development of the Buddhist architecture of the 7th century which is the major point of discussion of this paper. |
