Abstract The Stochastic Simulated Annealing(SSA) is a branch of combinatorial optimization techniques, which can realize the optimization of a system having a large number of interacting degrees of freedom. The SSA repeatedly compares a purturbated configuration set with the acceptance probability which allows uphill moves and consequently guarantees more probabilities to a global convergence until a predefined equilibriated status is reached. The algorithm based on SSA is developed in this research and successfully applied to the three dimensional moment resisting steel frames. The method is superior to conventional analytical or numerical methods in that is does not require either continuity or differentiablity of a function. Some more future work, however is needed to reduce convergence time during the annealing process.
