Problems of carrier space in space syntax : case of 5 model houses |
Abstract |
In space Syntax, developed by Bill Hillier (et al.), exterior spaces is termed as carrier space when building plans were analyzed. The carrier space is conceived as continuous, not divided arbitrarily into exterior regions; it is a single homogenous space which embraces the building and connects with it via doors. But this idea neglects the presence of multiple exteriors that often play significant role in the exterior based building plans. The paper discusses problems of this carrier space in syntax analysis of building plan and compares its RRA and RC values with that of multiple exterior. For this purpose 5 model house plans of Korea, ie., 1jeongju, 2linma, 3court, 4sqent, 5apt were chosen and general characteristics of them were defined. A syntactic analysis of them was conducted, and the results were compared with the general characteristics of the models. The study found the multiple exterior method is more appropriate in representing the general characteristics of this specific model. |
