Abstract The purpose of this study is to define the prototypes of site and floor plan patterns and to find the necessity for traditional rural houses in coastal area of Chonbuk province. There are some mounts on the its area. So the sites of houses are irregular rectangle style and on the even or sloped ground surface. Trees, walls of stones and blocks are stand on the site boundary and the rice fields are spread in front of the site. The access to site and the auxiliary buildings are located on side or front area of the site.In the lower class houses floor plan patterns are 3 kan or 4 kan linear gyubjib pattern that have jungjibang, golbang, small auxiliary kitchen and dojang or kwang. These are necessary to adapt to climate and regional condition and livelihood that combined both fishery and farming. In the upper class house, Farming is livelihood and floor plan patterns are similar to lower class houses. But gonnonbang has auxiliary kitchen and side floor, so it has privacy and independency in the house.
