Abstract Speech materials for room acoustical listening tests should have somewhat different features from the materials for other testing purposes, such as for computer science, lingustics and so on. In room acoustics, the number of incorrectly answered syllables is directly converted into the degree of distortion in the way of speech transmission i.e. the acoustical quality of a room. That is what is important of descriminative and sensible speech materials for room acoustical listening tests. On this basis, this study aims to discover the properties for a more discriminative and sensible Korean speech materials. The result of a series of pilot tests shows that the speech materials should not be too easy to listen, not be too difficult to pronounce, and be presented as they are actually used. Also, the fraction of sensible phonemes such as the first consonant with a strong aspiration is recommanded to be higher.
