The Characteristic of Ornament in Danish Folk Furniture |
| Abstract |
We, who are living in the modern society are supposed to understand foreign culture much more comparing to the former society, because the world is becoming closer and has frequent contacts among foreign countries day by day through the development of technology in mass media and transportation. In this repect, this study was carried out as a cross-cultural study of ornament in folk furniture between Denmark and Korea to promote understanding the eastern and western culture. It would be interesting and valuable if we could find out some similar factors as well as differences between folk furniture of the two countries locating very far away geographically, and having less cultural communication before each other. The two countries had quite different social backgrounds and these infleunced on the different development in folk furniture also. This study was identified through many study trips all over the districts in Denmark, as Danish folk furniture had very unique characteristics by districts even though it is not a large country just like Korea.Characteristics of ornament in Danish folk furniture were discussed in the fields of material, way of decoration, and motif in this study. Chracteristics of ornament in Korean folk furniture and comparison between the two countries will be discussed in the next study.It was very impressive that there were some similarities and differences both in the ornament of Danish and Korean folk furniture. It was considered because people always have tried to express their sincere longings and ambitions through their furniture around surroundings, even though they had no contacts each other. |
