Abstract The noise radiated from the high speed trains could cause a serious problem in using terminals. So, the noise levels in flatform area should be adjusted for better environmental condition of terminal buildings.The present study surveyed the current noise levels and criteria of high speed trains in several countries. Also, a computer simulations were employed to pridict noise levels of various conditions using Chonan high speed train terminal.As a result, three key surfaces were suggested as the critical areas for the effective noise abatement in flatform space. Those are noise barrier between rails, ballast mat under the rails and suspended absorbing panels on ceiling. The results show that the noise of 10 dB(A) could be reduced when these solutions could be applied simultaneously.
