Title |
An Experimental Study on the Bearing Strength of the Steel Column Base under Axial Forces |
Abstract |
The problem of large forces acting over limited contact areas of concrete is one of frequent accurence in design. Steel base plates of stanchions over concrete footing, anchor plates in prestressed concrete structures, bridge bearings over piers, shear keys in composite structrues, concrete hinge and bearing blocks, beams over walls and concrete column, pile heads and capping slab, etc., are a few instances of bearing problems. It is necessary that a resonably accurate assessment of the bearing strength of concrete be made in the design, so that premature failure of the structure through failure in bearing in avoided. The experimental studies on the bearing strength of concrete have been reported by several investigators, and the formulas were recommended in codes of practice of various countries. The principal variables influencing the bearing strength of concrete are geometry of loaded area and specimen, nature of bed supporting the specimen, supported area of specimen, concrete properties, specimen size, and form and amount of reinforcement, etc.In this study, the effect of concrete strength, size and height of specimen, shape of bearing plate, dimensions of the bearing plate relative to those of specimen, and form of reinforcement were evaluated.General expressions and charts relating the ultimate concrete bearing strength to the parameters were derived form the experimental results and presented. |
