Abstract This study presents the optimal design technique of gable steel building by tapered members and P.E.B. system. The optimal section proportions of tapered members according to several design constraints and load conditions are derived, based on the minimum weight design. Also, the total weight and cost ratio of tapered member system considering the various design variables are compared with those of prismatic member system by direct optimization method to evaluate the economy of tapered gable steel building.
