A Study on the Research Methods of Typemorphology |
Abstract |
This study aims to suggest the typomorphological method for research in urban fabric. For this purpose, Conzenean and Muratorian school which are two of the typomorphological research groups in Europe are analyzed and their research attitudes, methods, scopes, materials, and theories are compared. The research of Conzenean school focused on discription of the historical process of a city's development, and the other side, that of Muratorian sought to isolate the fundamental principles of city making. Therefore, Conzen's contribution was building two important theories: Fringe-belt theory and Burgage-cycle theory. These two could built by conceptualization of several aspects in a growing urban area. And Muratorian's were finding out a leading type which follows the principles of city making and synchronous variation, and establishing procedural types of buildings in Italy. Muratorian and Conzenean schools make different contributions to knowledge of the built landscape. They address different diciplinary and cultural issues and use different methods of inquiry. Together, however, these schools elaborate the exiting beginnings of a scholarly apporach to the built landscape which complements established design research. The outline a way of learning how cities are produced and built that can support the further development of design and planning theory. |
