Abstract |
Without a full understanding of the rational structure and the transparent space of the Gothic architecture regarded as one of the major roots at the start of Modern Architectural Movement, one can not completely appreciate the concept of the modern architecture. From the nineteenth century when the interest in the Gothic architecture was increased, a study on the Gothic architecture was concentrated on the building itself and the internal space. However, a comparative study on the internal and the external space of the Gothic architecture was rare. The results of the study on the spatial interpretation of the French Gothic cathedral architecture of this study by analyzing the facts and contexts mentioned above can be summarized as follows:In the internal space of the French Gothic cathedral, thedirection and the axis(path) are essential in the Existential Space of Chritian Norberg Schultz, and they arrive at the center of the altar as the final aim after going through many transit centers like the labyrinth and the crossing on the long axis. On the other hand, in the external space of the French Gothic cathedral, the plaza closed by the continuous mass of surrounding buildings means the center and palce as the exxence of Existential Space of C. Norberg Schultz. |
