Abstract A compatibility method of analysis for the forces and deflections in outrigger-braced structures subjected to linearly varying lateral loading is presented. From the condition that the rotation of the core at the outrigger level is matched with the rotation of the inboard end of the corresponding outrigger, the outrigger restraining moment is derived analytically. From this, the core moment diagram, the outrigger moment, and cloumn axial forces may be datermined. The horizontal deflcetions of the structure are then obtained from the core moment diagram by, for example, the moment-area method. Although the formulae are accurate only for idealized outrigger structures that the core, columns and wind load are varying linearly with the height of the building, they have a useful practical purpose in providing a guide to the behavior, and for making approximate estimates of the forces and deflections, in practical outrigger structures.
